Aim was to create an institution like prison to investigate the behaviour of groups that have unequal resources, power and status. They also saw that the guards were disunited as the(cid:455) (cid:272)ould(cid:374)(cid:859)t agree o(cid:374) ho(cid:449) to run the place. The guards thus had issues with having the power in the experiment. The independent variables tested in the study were permeability, legitimacy and cognitive alter(cid:374)ati(cid:448)es these (cid:449)ere (cid:271)ase o(cid:374) the so(cid:272)ial identity theory. Permeability: prisoners were told that the test to choose the guards was not perfect so some of them may have guard like qualities too, and thsu may be promoted as a guard on day three. Legitimacy: 3days after the promotion, they were told that the allocation of roles was actually random.
