10:05: piaget left an indelible footprint on developmental psychology, many aspects of theory are still deliberated today, stage like verses continuous, children"s active construction of knowledge, children"s symbolic understanding of the world. Weaknesses in piaget"s theory: children"s thinking not as consistent as theory predicts, no correlation between conservation of number (passes at 6 years) and conservation of liquid (passes 8-9) Socio-cultural approach: how the culture of a social group (values, thought processes, beliefs, practices, knowledge etc. ) is transmitted to the next generation. Like piaget , viewed child as an active agent of knowledge: unlike piaget, argued that development was a result of social interaction between the child and he competent other. It is though the community that the child gains access to he ways of thinking and constructing knowledge of the world. Large cross-cultural differences: development should always be interpreted in the light of the cultural context in which it takes place.
