Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition (dsm-5) The diagnostic criteria sets -> help doctors make the same diagnosis. Criteria a: five (or more) symptoms present during the same 2-week period and represent a change from previous functioning; must have either (1) depressed mood or (2) loss of interest or pleasure. Sleep disturbances -> unable to go to sleep, or need to sleep very often. Note: do not include symptoms that are do to another medical condition. Criteria b: symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Criteria c: symptoms not attributable to the effects of a substance or medical condition. Criteria d: the occurrence of an episode is not better explained by an other psychiatric disorder. Criteria e. there has never been a manic episode or a hypomanic episode.
