Document Summary

Career is advancement: vertical mobility: up is good, down is bad, based on this approach, a career represents the sequence of promotions and other upward moves in a work-related hierarchy during a person"s working life. Career as profession: certain occupations represent a career; other do not, clear pattern of systematic advancement regularized status passage, example: lawyers, doctors, academics, some jobs do not generally lead to advancement. Career is the evolving sequence of a persons" working experiences. Evolving because no one knows what the future will bring. Work and time are involved in this view because it is over time: that someone can change the way they work, or it can be changed for them by outsides forces. Career success or failure is best assessed by the person whose career is being considered: no absolute criteria for evaluating a career, every person has the right & responsibility to make his/her own life choice.
