Hofstede: culture is the collective programming of the mind. Trompenaars: culture is the way a group of people solve problems. Robbins: culture is like water to fish. It is there all the time but the fish are oblivious to it. Cross-cultural awareness includes the following: increase self-awareness: be sensitised to difference, question our knowledge foundations, avoid parochialism, help to reduce ignorance, prejudice and hatred. Cross cultural awareness increases our awareness of our own culture! Multi-cultural business teams may face the following potential difficulties: mistrust, miscommunication, process difficulties. A contract is a contract and commitments must be honored. All persons should have opinions and should be prepared to express their feelings even if (perhaps, especially if) they don"t agree with their colleagues" opinions. Life is preordained and individuals have little or no influence on their future. Contracts and commitments may be overtaken by new circumstances; they signal intentions at a certain point in time.
