BIOL1003: Module 2 - Genetics
Lecture 3 Cell Division (Mitosis and Meiosis)
Mitosis
The cell cycle - Interphase
o
o G2 making the machinery to divide the cell
o Interphase = yellow bit
o G0 phase - heart muscle cells and brain cells are stuck in this phase, as they do not
undergo cell division
o Mitosis - cell division of every cell
o It replicates the genetic material 100% the same, very rarely is there a change
Prophase - the chromosomes become visible (you can see the sausages)
o Nuclear envelope (nuclear membrane) starts breaking down in early prophase
o Then the membrane will nearly completely break down
o Then the spindles appear to get ready from division
o Chromosomes condense
o Centrioles split up and move to opposite poles
o Nuclear membrane breakdown
Metaphase
o The spindles are all presence
o The centrioles are visible
o Spindle fibers join the centrioles to the centromeres
o Each centromere has 2 spindle fibers attached to it (one from each side)
o Actual breaking od centromeres in mitosis
o The force is stronger between the spindle fibers and chromosomes is stronger than the
centromere itself
o Spindle apparatus forms
o Chromosomes align on the metaphase plate
o Spindle fibers attach to centromere
Anaphase
o Spindle fibers contract
o Daughter chromosomes disjoin and separate to opposite poles
Telophase
o New nuclear membranes start forming around the 2 daughter cells
