PHTY201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Peripheral Nervous System, Spinal Nerve, Efferent Nerve Fiber
Document Summary
Week 1: cells of the nervous system & signalling in the nervous system. Afferent fibres: carry sensory information into and along the spinal cord. Efferent fibres: carry motor information along and out of the spinal cord (voluntary control of muscles: ie the sensory component is input and the motor component is output, motor division: Somatic ns: this is to do with voluntary body movement. Receive information so they have a receptive part. These are also known as afferent neurons. They receive stimuli from sensory receptors (receives stimuli from environment) The stimuli enters the cell body -> it is sent through the axon -> reaches axon terminal. In a sensory neuron, the cell body and dendrites are located outside the spinal cord. The dendrites are generally long and the axons are short. This has a cell body at one end and dendrites encasing the cell body. They are also generally called efferent neurons.
