Week 1 introduction to ergonomics and occupational health and safety & Ergonomics: the science of understanding interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and designing an environment which optimizes human well-being and overall system performance. Synonymous terms: human factors, human factors engineering, human engineering, Fitting the task to human by considering human dimensions, capabilities and limitations as factor of design. A design that focuses on ensuring safety, ease of use, comfort and efficiency. Focus on interaction of human and the environment. Apply theories, principles, data and other methods of design to optimize human well- being and overall system performance. Special consideration for other populations with unique requirements (universal design for all) Physical ergonomics: related to physical activities (human anatomy, anthropometric, physiological, biomechanical characteristics) Cognitive ergonomics: higher cortical processes (interaction of human and other elements, memory, motor response, reaction to stress) Organisational ergonomics: looking environmentally -> workplace (optimising sociotechnical systems, organisation structure, workplace policies and processes)
