Rule 4.1 Author
Authors name should be as in the source document
Titles to be omitted except for Sir, Dame and peerage title
Where there are multiple authors rule 1.14.2 should be followed that is;
Where they are two or three, all names are to be included with ‘and’
separating the names of the last two authors.
If above 3 first author should be stated with ‘et al’

MAKE SURE THE JOURNAL NAME IS IN ITALICS
Rule 4.2 Title: should not be italicised but should have single quotation marks.
Rule 4.3 Year: Journals organised by volume appear in parenthesis while those by
year appear in square brackets.
Rule 4.4 Volume and Issue: For journals organised by volumes. The Volumes number
comes after the year. Where it has issues they come after the volume in parenthesis
Rule 4.5 Journal: full title of the journal should be in italis. Note; journal title should
not be abbreviated. Example: Harvard Law Review not Harvard L Rev.
Rule 4.6 Starting Page: Number of the first page of the article should come after the
journal title.
Rule 4.7 Pinpoint Reference: it should come after the starting page but proceeded by a
comma and a space.
Rule 4.9 Articles Publishes in Electronic Journals: Electronic journal should be as
much applicable be cited as printed journals, where impractical to do so, note the
following
Pinpoint reference should be to page and paragraph numbers
Provide a URL (no dates should be included)

Rule 5.1: Author
Rule 5.1.1 General rule: authors’ name should appear exactly as they do on the
source.
Rule 5.1.2 Editors: Same as authors but followed by ‘(ed)’ for one editor and
‘(eds)’ for multiple editors.
Rule 5.2 Title: should appear in italics.
Rule 5.3: Publication Details
Rule 5.3.1 Publisher: Publisher name to be in parenthesis after the title followed by a
comma.
Rule 5.3.2 Edition Number and Date of First Publication: Edition number should be
included after the publisher’s name.
Rule 5.3.4 Publication Year comes after the publication details
Rule 5.4 Pinpoint Reference
Note:
1. Chapter title should be enclosed in single inverted comma.
2. No other punctuations between the chapter title and ‘in’.
3. Starting page is where the chapter cited begins.
Repeated References in Secondary Sources
Give first reference in full.
Subsequent references – refer back to the first reference.
