BIOL122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Circulatory System, Nephron, Renal Function
Document Summary
Pharmacokinetics refers to: how the body acts on the drug . Pharmacokinetics involves 4 distinct stages (easily remembered as adme): How the drug gets into the blood by crossing cell membranes. How the drug is transported through the blood. How the drug is modified by the body, generally for excretion. How the drug is permanently removed from the body. Our character takes 100 mg of drug x orally. The drug goes through his/her digestive system and reaches the small intestine where it is absorbed. 2 things will determine the extent to which drug x is absorbed: the nature of the absorbing surface (wall of the small intestine, the nature of the drug itself (drug x) Number of cell membranes the drug needs to cross less = easier. Surface area that the drug needs to cross more surface area = easier. Blood supply to the area the drug is trying to cross more = easier.
