• Endochondral ossification:
o Original model is hyaline cartilage
o All bones (except skull and clavicles) develop by endochondral ossification
o Commences before birth, continues throughout childhood and into early adulthood
o Primary ossification centre: first occurs in the shaft of the bone (diaphysis)
o Secondary ossification centre: occurs in the ends of the bone (epiphysis)
o Bone continues to grow in length by continued ossification at the metaphysis
