• Schwann calls:
o Peripheral nervous system
o Provide myelination of axons in the PNS
o A single cell forms myelin around a segment of one axon (in contrast to the
ability of oligodendrocytes to branch and sheath parts of more than one axon)

o Gaps between adjacent cell segments: nodes of Ranvier
o Action potential firing can occur only at nodes of Ranvier

• Microglia:
o Central nervous system
o Small cells with short irregular processes
o Evenly distributed throughout grey and white matter
o Originate from circulating blood monocytes
o Migrate through the neuropil and remove damaged cells and invading
microorganisms
