• Simple cuboidal epithelial tissue:
o Cube shaped
o Central nucleus
o Protects underlying cells
o May be specialised for secretion or adsorption
o Found lining ducts (e.g. kidney), in glands (e.g. salivary, thyroid)
o
• Simple columnar epithelial tissue:
o Cells are taller than they are wide, central or basal nucleus
o Protects tubes (e.g. gastrointestinal tract) and adsorption of nutrients
o Found lining major ducts (e.g. kidney), small and large intestines, bronchi,
reproductive tracts
o
• Uni-layered or simple epithelium:
o Single layer of cells resting on a basement membrane
o Consistent distances between cell nuclei and basement membrane
o Surface that substances can move across
o Thin tissue
o Fragile
o No mechanical protection
