The first thing people notice about another person is usually the face: the face communicates information such as emotional state, interest, competence, and trustworthiness. By age 7, children can make judgments about whether a face is trustworthy or not, that match adult consensus judgments. The amygdala is important for judging trustworthiness. Eye contact is important in social situations, though how people perceive that contact depends on their culture: western no eye contact means they are ashamed, embarrassed or lying. Eye contact truthful and friendly: other cultures it can be disrespectful. Nonverbal behavior - the facial expressions, gestures, mannerisms, and movements by which one communicates with others: thin slices of behavior people can make accurate judgment based on only a few seconds of observation. Attributions - people"s explanations for why events or actions occur. Personal attributions - explanations of people"s behavior that refer to their internal characteristics: abilities, traits, moods, or efforts.
