By defining crime, we take a step toward controlling it: by having a definition of crime, we can make people liable to prosecution and punishment. It is hard to effectively control private law breaking. Law is a product of societies interactions (a majority decides the laws) It is hard to divide morality and law morality is the source of law: conflict. The law is a weapon of powerful groups of people who can use it to their advantage highly divided societies. As societies become more divided by economics and labor divisions, the more advantaged use the law to protect themselves. Here law and morality are partial and selective morality and criminality will (cid:272)o(cid:374)ti(cid:374)ue to fa(cid:448)or the (cid:373)ore ad(cid:448)a(cid:374)taged (cid:894)lo(cid:449)er (cid:272)lasses (cid:449)ill (cid:271)e (cid:373)ore (cid:858)(cid:272)ri(cid:373)i(cid:374)al(cid:859)(cid:895) Private morality and the public interest: though there are crimes that have a most direct effect on the individuals themselves (drugs, porn, prostitution), they may have a less direct effect on surrounding communities.
