How did galaxies form? the following: we can"t see back to the birth of galaxies, so we use, the most successful models for galaxy formation assume theoretical models. Hydrogen & helium gas filled all of space more or less uniformly when the universe was very young (about million years old) & the material w/in them began to contract into protogalactic clouds: the clouds cooled and eventually formed stars, most galaxies are like ours: disk/spheroidal stars. Disk: formed after the rotation of the galaxy was organized. Galaxies may have ended up looking different b/c they began w/ slightly diff conditions in their protogalactic clouds. Galaxies may have begun their lives similarly but later changed due to interactions w/ other galaxies: conditions in the protogalactic cloud.
