Society - system of interrelationships that connects individuals. Values - ideas held by individuals or groups about what is desirable, proper good and bad. Conflicts of values/norms foster a sense of isolation and frustration. Material culture - physical objects that a society creates that influence the ways in which people live. Language - primary way of meaning and communicating in a society. Signifier - vehicle of meaning and communication. Semiotics - study of the ways in which nonlinguistic phenomena can generate meaning. Culture and change: cultural turn in sociology. Cultural turn - sociology"s recent emphasis on the importance of understanding the role of culture in daily life. The cultural turn in sociology reveals that there is no single reality to social encounters and that multiple cultural scripts can play out in any situation.
