This movement was a way for second generation migrants who consider france to be their home to have a voice. Beur = berber + europe = a commitment to a future in the eu and claims a stake in european culture for children of maghrebi immigrants and other ethnic groupings traditionally marginalized by french society. Led to french rap music and beur fm radio. These immigrants could not express themselves because they could not speak french. They worked and sent money back to their family. Their children wanted another life that was not just work and going to school, so they started expressing themselves culturally in dance, cinema, literature, music, painting, sculpture, etc. Film is based on the autobiographical novel written by mehdi charef.
