Using the balances in lab. In our labs, we have the denver instruments si- 403 top loading balance. They have a capacity of 400 grams, readability or 1 mg, and a repeatability of 0. 001 grams. They are very sensitive, and must be balanced so the air bubble on the front is within the small circle. Our lab staff double- checks this, but if you have a balance that is not centered, please let us know. Any small movements can be cause for readjustment. The pans are very sensitive to chemicals and as such care should be taken. Wipe off any spills immediately, and always use weighing paper or a small beaker to measure chemicals. Never place chemicals directly on the balance pan. Always remove and replace the cover with care. General instructions for using a top- loading balance: make sure the balance pan is clean.
