• Physical environment of the operating room.
o Three distinct areas
▪ Unrestricted area: people in street clothes can interact with those in surgical attire.
▪ Semi-restricted area:surrounding support areas and corridors.
• Only authorized staff are allowed to access to the semi restricted areas. Must be
wearing surgical attire and cover all head and facial hair.
• Restricted area: OR, scrubs sink area, and sterile core
o Holding Area
▪ Preoperative holding area
▪ Surgical care improvement project (SCIP)
• national quality partnership of organizations focused on improving surgical care
by reducing the number or complications from surgery.
• Preprocedure verification process for validating relevant documents
▪ Admission, Observation, and discharge (AOD)
• Designed to allow early morning admission for outpatient surgery, same-day
admission, and inpatient holding before surgery
• Assess preoperative information, observe the patient before and after surgery,
and allow sufficient recovery before discharge.
o Operating Room
▪ Usually next to the Postanesthesia, and aseptically, and its restricted in terms of flow
and staff
▪ Filteras and controlled airflow prevent infection
▪ Positive airflow pressure prevents air from from entering the room
▪ UV light may be used to reduce microorganisms in the air
• Surgical Team
o Registered Nurse
▪ Perioperative nurse is an RN who implements the patients plan of care during the
perioperative period. You prepare the patients for the OR before they arrive
• Maintain patient safety, privacy, dignity, and confidentiality
• Communicate with the patient
• Provide physical care
▪ Scrub Nurse
• Follow the designated surgical hand antisepsis procedure and remain in sterile
field in gown
▪ Circulating Nurse
• Remain in unsterile field and so you are not gowned and gloved in sterile attire.
o Licensed Practical/ Vocational Nurse and Surgical Technologist
▪ Sets the standard for education, provides continuing education opportunities, and
offers certification for surgical technologists
o Surgeon and Assistant
▪ Surgeon is the physician who performs the surgical procedure
▪ Responsible for:
• Preoperative medical history and physical assessment
• Patient safety and management in the OR
• Postoperative management of the patient
▪ Assistant:
• Physician in the assisting role.
o Registered Nurse First Assistant
