Two types of prosocial behavior: egoistic helping: the ultimate goal of the helper is to increase his/her own welfare, altruistic helping: ultimate goal of the helper is to increase another"s welfare without expecting anything in return. Helping for the sake of helping (altruistic) vs helping to make yourself look good (egoistic) Because it proved the bystander effect and that a story changes as you ask different people. Kin selection: people prefer to help blood relatives because it will increase the odds that their genes will be transmitted to subsequent generations. Social norms for helping others: rules for how people should behave or what is expected/appropriate behavior.
