The cyclic mass emerged as the major genre on which composers lavished their great skill: there is nothing unified about the five parts of this cyclic mass, kyrie, gloria, credo, sanctus, agnus dei. The highest musical genre because of its technical virtuosity: motets were a middle musical genre, adopting the melody- dominated texture that had been associated with secular song.
