The church cultivated, supported, and directed music as it did art, architecture, poetry and learning. Gregorian chant- monophonic song of the catholic. Plainchant- unaccompanied, monophonic (one-line) music for voices; official music of the catholic church: simple recitation on a monotone, intricate songs with hundreds of notes ranging over an octave. Plainchants are typically nonmetrical- no clearly established meter. Not constructed in the major/minor mode, but in one of the medieval modes: dorian (centered around d, phrygian (centered around e, lydian (centered around f, mixolydian (centered around g) Sequence- a famous chant that often came after the hallelujah in mass. Guido d"arezzo developed the first system of sight singing: ut re mi fa sol la (movable ut) Reciting tone- the pitch on which the text is sung: often repeated again and again except for small, formulaic variations at beginnings and ends of phrases. Antiphon- a genre of plainchant usually in a simple melodic style with very few melismas.
