(pp 1) Defining sexuality is socially and individually variable. There are different ways of packaging sexuality based on behavior, identity, and desire. Contemporary forms of desire are defined by the sexual anatomy of the partners . Sexualities used to be defined by gender expression. Sexual types of people are taken for granted -- there is an assumption that sexual bid line up corresponds to our sexual categories. Two types of identity: individual and social. Individual = who we are to ourselves. Social = who we are to others. Sexual identity is build in relation to a culture"s sexual categories and [depends] on others for recognition. (pp 2) It is a process that emerges from dynamic interplay with the social world .
