In traditional families women had a commitment solely to their families. Modern families dilute the authority of extended families. There were many different versions of the traditional family but all had to do with dependence on each other, whether it was to raise the kids or pick cotton while a maid took care of the household duties. The shift of the industrial revolution was no better as children began brutal work outside the home. American family(cid:863) i(cid:374) (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374) a(cid:374)d (cid:272)hildre(cid:374) did (cid:374)ot (cid:449)ork. The great depression and wwii posed new problems to families. Not all families fit into the same mold. It is hard to assess family and marriage shifts because they ae so diverse. More people get divorced today, but more people were in unhappy marriages before now. There obviously have been family shifts, but it hard to say exactly what type of shift s or to quantify the because our perceptions are so differe(cid:374)t fro(cid:373) the reality.
