Document Summary

2. 12 - periodic trends in atomic properties. Covalent bond - sharing of electron pairs btw atoms. Covalent atomic radii: use the distance btw radii of covalently bonded atoms to determine size of atomic radii. For nonmetallic atoms that don"t make diatomic molecules, atomic radii are estimated from various covalent compounds. Metallic radii - distance btw metal atoms in solid metal crystals. Atomic radii decrease from left to right across period b/c of decreased shielding (increasing effective nuclear charge) from left to right valence electrons are drawn closer to nucleus decreasing size of atom. Ionization energy - energy required to remove e- from gaseous atom or ion. First ionization energy () - e required to remove highest-e e- of atom. Highest-e e- (bound least tightly) is first removed (atom assumed to be in ground state) Makes sense b/c the charge of atom changes each time e- is removed increase in + charge binds e- more firmly ionization e increases.
