Document Summary

~ chapter one: what is anthropological perspective ~ What is anthropology: anthropologists want to learn about as many different human ways of life as they can. They often are startled to discover familiarities: anthropology aims to describe in the broadest sense what it means to be human. This is based on empirical evidence that any aspect of culture is entangles with other aspects in complex ways: anthropology is interested in comparison. It is also a field-based discipline, so the actual data collection takes place outside the lab or office and in direct contact with the people of interest. What is the concept of culture: an important consequence of evolution was the emergence of culture. This allows us to adapt the world around us. We are more dependent on learning for survival, and the learned aspects of our cultures teach us how to both survive and live.
