Free men have capacity to reason (as opposed to slaves and those involved in the oikos) Slaves and women are in charge of the oikos. It is important to have this distinction so that those involved in the polis can have their minds focused solely on the art of politics. Slaves can manage the household, as that is what they were born to do.
