Chapter 14: social and personality development in early adulthood. Intimacy versus isolation- erikson early adulthood stage, in which an individual must find a life partner or supportive friends in order to avoid social isolation. Intimacy- capacity to engage in a supportive, affectionate relationship without losing one"s sense of self. Depends on good resolution of identity vs. role confusion. Adults who entered adulthood without identity would be incapable of intimacy. Life structure- all the roles an individual occupies all of his/her relationships, and the conflicts and balance that exist among them. Each period has its own conflict/ developmental task. Mid-era phase- adults become more competent at meeting new challenges through reassessment and reorganization. Emerging adulthood- the period from the late teens to early twenties when individuals explore options prior to committing to adult roles. Young people don"t think of themselves as adults until 25. Rational decision making, impulse control, self-regulation matures.
