Takes place in the first 2 weeks after conceptions. After 1 week the zygote is called a blastocyst. Organogenesis: process of organ formation during the first 2 months of prenatal development. 24 days the cells for the heart begin to differentiate. 4th week: urogenital system becomes apparent; arm and leg buds emerge. 4 chambers of heart take shape, blood vessels appear. 5th-8th week: face starts to form, intestinal tract develops. 3 months post conception: arms, legs and head move, mouth opens and closes facial features distinguishable as are limbs, can be identified as male or female. 4th month: 5. 5 inches in length, about 5 ounces, mom can feel it move. 5th month: 11 inches, close to 1 lb, skin structures like nails have formed, active fetus. Neurons = nerve cells that handle info processing at the cellular level in the brain. Basic architecture of brain is assembled during first 2 trimesters.
