Ethnicity is based on cultural similarities (with members of the same ethnic group) and differences (between that group and others) in a society or nation. Ethnic group: one among several culturally distinct groups in a society or region. Fredrik barth: states that ethnicity can be said to exist when people claim a certain ethnic identity for themselves + are defined by others as having that identity. Status = prestige (in daily conversation but in social science, that is not the true meaning) Status: any position that determines where someone fits in society. Ascribed status: social status based on little or no choice. Achieved status: social status based on choices or accomplishments. Situational negotiation of social identity: one identity is used in certain settings, another in different ones. Hispanics represent the fastest-growing ethnic group in the u. s. Hispanic is a category based mainly on language. Latino is a broader category which also can include brazilians.
