Why summarize: frequency: number of times or how often a category, score, or range of scores occurs, summarization is a part of descriptive statistics, makes presentation and interpretation of a distribution of data clearer. Frequency distributions for grouped data: frequency distribution: summary display for a distribution of data organized or summarized in terms of how often a category score, or range of scores occurs, simple frequency distributions: summarize how often scores occur. Rules for creating a simple frequency distribution: each interval is defined (lower and upper boundary, each interval is equidistant, no intervals overlap, all values are rounded to the same degree of accuracy measured in the original data. Relative frequency distribution: relative frequency = proportion from 0 to 1. 0 that describes the portion of data in each interval. = observed frequency / total frequency count: summary display that distributes the proportion of scores in each interval.
