Document Summary

Emotion- an immediate, specific positive or negative response to environmental events or internal thoughts. They involve activation of the autonomic nervous system to prepare the body to meet environmental challenges. Primary emotions- emotions that are innate, evolutionarily adaptive and universal: ex: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, happiness, surprise, and contempt. Secondary emotions- blends of primary emotions: ex: remorse, guilt, submission, shame, love, bitterness and jealousy. Limbic system- consists of the brain structures that border the cerebral cortex. Also involved in the perception of social stimuli. Information reaches the amygdala through two separate pathways. Quick and dirty path- processes sensory information instantaneously (except smell) this path is from the thalamus to the amygdala for priority processing. Slow path- slower but leads to more deliberate and more thorough evaluations. Sensory information travels from the thalamus to the visual cortex where the information is analyzed in a greater depth before it is passed along to the amygdala.
