Many sources of fear and anxiety: learned. Previously neutral stimuli: repeatedly paired with frightening stimuli/events. Person learns that neutral stimuli can elicit fear even without presence of frightening stimuli. Fear response occurs in absence of external danger spontaneous panic attack. Components of fear: all components are not always present together. Cognitive/subjective: i feel terrified. , i am going to die. Anticipates person for flight-or-flight response if danger will occur in future. Cognitive/subjective: negative mood, worry about possible future threats of danger, self-preoccupation, sense of being unable to predict future. Physiological: state of tension, chronic over-arousal preparing for something bad to happen. Behavioral: strong tendency to avoid situations where a person may encounter danger, no immediate urge to flee. People with 1 anxiety disorder will develop another anxiety disorder or depression. Major cause for adults: neuroticism proneness/disposition to experience negative mood states: common risk factor for anxiety/mood disorders, affected gaba, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels.
