Substance use- ingestion of psychoactive substances in moderate amounts that doesn"t significantly interfere with functioning. Substance intoxication- physiological reaction and mood change resulting from the ingestion of a psychoactive substance: experienced as impaired judgement, mood changes, and impaired motor ability. Substance abuse- pattern of drug use leading to significant distress or impairment in social/occupational roles and in hazardous situations: amount needed depends on how it affects functioning. Alcoholism and drug abuse originally categorized as sociopathic disorders, and we viewed as sign of moral weakness while genetic components were ignored. Often occur with other disorders: by chance with more common disorder, drugs can create depressive, anxious, and psychotic symptoms, can drink to alleviate depression, consequences of drugs may cause depression. Depressants- result in behavioral sedation and can induce relaxation. Wernicke-korsakoff syndrome- confusion, loss of muscle coordination, and impaired speech due to a deficiency in thiamine, which is poorly metabolized by heavy drinkers.
