Mood disorders- group of disorders involving severe and enduring disturbances in emotionality, ranging from elation to severe depression] Mania- period of abnormally excessive elation or euphoria; involves high activity, little sleep, and may develop grandiose plans with belief that they can accomplish anything: typically rapid speech and flight of ideas. Hypomanic episode- less severe version of manic episode that does not cause impairment in social or occupational functioning and needs to only last for 4 days rather than a week. Unipolar mood disorder- experience only depression or mania. Bipolar mood disorder- experience alternating periods of depression and mania: dysphoric manic episode (mixed manic episode)- condition where person experiences both elation and depression or anxiety simultaneously (usually anxiousness about uncontrollability of self) Double depression- severe mood disorder characterized by a major depressive episode superimposed on a period of dysthymic disorder: patients who recover from major depressive episode have high relapse and recurrence rates. Onset and duration: major depressive disorder.
