PSYC 106 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Cauda Equina, Preganglionic Nerve Fibers, Adrenal Medulla
Document Summary
Chapter 3 notes- the structure of the nervous system. Neuraxis- imaginary line drawn through center of length of central nervous system, from bottom of spinal cord to front of forebrain. Anterior- front; posterior- back; dorsal- top of head; ventral- bottom, facing ground. Ipsilateral- on same side of body; contralateral- on opposite sides of body. Midsagittal plane- divides brain into hemisphere: sagittal- vertical cut down length, cross section- vertical cut down width, horizontal section- horizontal cut. Cerebral spinal fluid (csf) protects brain: brain weighs less because submerged in liquid, which reduced pressure on base of brain, also reduces shock that would be cause by sudden head movement, produced by choroid plexus. Produced continually, so must be a mechanism for removal. Arachnoid granulations- projections of arachnoid membrane through which csf flows and is reabsorbed into blood supply. Begins at around 18th day after conception: ectoderm thickens to form neural plate, sides/ridges of neural plate curve together.
