Document Summary

Stereotypes- beliefs that certain attributes are characteristic of members of particular groups. Think of person as member of a group and project what you know about that group onto them. Prejudice- a negative attitude or affective response toward a certain group and its individual members. Involves prejudicing others because they belong to a certain group. Discrimination- unfair treatment of members of a group based on their membership in that group. Involves treatment based on someone"s group membership rather than character or ability. Stereotype + prejudice + discrimination = belief + attitude + behavior (components of behavior) Led to creation of theories to explain modern, constrained and conflicted prejudice. Modern racism- prejudice directed at other racial groups that exists alongside rejection of explicitly racist beliefs. People often have strong egalitarian values that lead them to reject prejudice and discrimination, but still have unacknowledged negative feelings and attitudes toward minority groups that stem from ingroup favoritism and desire to defend status quo.
