PSYC 102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Optical Flow, Vestibular System, Wayfinding
Document Summary
Ecological approach to perception- focuses on studying moving observers and on determining how their movement creates perceptual info that both guides further movement and helps observers perceive the environment; proposed by gibson. Optic flow- objects move past you in opposite direction. Movement relevant to objects environment causes you to see the objects moving as you go past them: optic flow is more rapid near moving observer. Gradient of flow- different speed of flow (fast near observer and slower farther away); *provides info about how fast observer is moving: no flow at destination toward which observer is moving. Focus of expansion (foe)- absence of flow at destination point. Invariant information- info that remains constant even when the observer is moving. Flow and foe always provide info to observer about speed and direction, regardless of situation or environment person is moving through. Self-produced information- when a person makes a movement, that movement creates info which is used to guide further movement.
