4 year old children who delayed graiicaion (expressed future-oriented self-control) longer in lab seing developed into more cogniively and socially competent adolescents, beter school performance, and coped beter with frustraion and stress, also had higher sat scores. Infants usually characterized as impaient and driven by impulsivity and immediate saisfacion. An essenial feature of self-regulaion is the ability to delay graiicaion. Children who choose to delay are usually smarter, resistant to temptaion, have greater social responsibility, and higher achievement strivings. Child is then shown a pair of rewards that difer in value. Children gets the preferred reward at the end of the waiing period. They can end waiing period by ringing bell, but they will only get the less preferred reward is they do this. Believed that child"s ability to mentally represent the delayed reward will reinforce delaying behavior; thinking about reward will help them to wait longer.
