PSYC 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Random Assignment, Behavioural Genetics, Twin Study
Document Summary
Although parening styles have changed, away from punishment/violence, children"s personality/behavior have not. Role of nature in children"s personality has been ignored, environmental explanaions sill favored nurture assumpion - favoring of nurture in diferences among children; parents believed to be most important part of child"s environment. Ambiguous evidence is interpreted to support nurture argument (usually conclude causaion from correlaional studies, despite possible alternaive explanaions based on geneic similarity) Ex) children with warm secure relaionships with mothers have beter relaionships later in life, and parents with high emoional expressivity have children who also express emoions freely. To determine role of nature and nurture in characterisic, need to make sure it is not due completely to one or the other irst. Using behavioral geneics, using adopted children or staisically controlling for geneics to eliminate nature porion shows that home environment had litle/no efect on children personality and intelligence later on. Common genes account for similariies in children, siblings, and parents.
