PHIL 28 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Moral Realism, Scientific Method, Rule Utilitarianism
Document Summary
When we have debates about morality, we are not talking about how people happen to act. Even if we disagree, we can still benefit from discussing morality with each other. 3 different theories about basis of morality. Morality exists independently of our beliefs and values (like how math works) Torturing innocent children for fun is wrong regardless of what people happen to believe about morality. Even if people thought that it was okay, it would still be wrong. Morality depends essentially on our beliefs and values (like how etiquette works) If eating with your elbows on the table is rude, that comes from believes and values. If nobody held those beliefs, then eating with your elbows would not be rude. Action is right or wrong if and only if god says so. We all have 3 things in common. We have values that we live by. We have an interest assessing the values we live by.
