Places were named new something in reference to an existing or past city. Further in the past, the new signified an existing city that was drawing on a dead city. The way new was used from the mid 1800s on was to show that it was a competing/rival city. Nationalism took root in the americas first because they were further away from their colonial powers and because they had this sense of competition. There was large scale european immigration to the americas and the assimilation of many of the native peoples. This made the wars of independence a conflict almost between brothers. Connection to a european state and city that was kept alive by the more rapid movement of information. In the east, there was also widespread immigration, but never any connection to a home city or state that lasted.
