The Beginning of the Story
He was called to Aleppo to go to a thing with the Sultan. When he got there, he visited
many holy sites and made pilgrimages. They also got news of what happened to the fleet in
Egypt. The leader of it brought it East to Oman and then took the island called Muscat. It was
held by a Portuguese fort. He lost a bunch of ships getting there. Then he heard the Portuguese
were on the way and he knew that he couldn’t beat them with the number of ships he had left,
so he fled. Most of the fleet was wrecked because of storms and he returned with three of the
original fifty ships. Then, the Sultan named another head of the fleet and had him take some
ships down to Egypt to collect the previous captain and all of his stuff. This new fleet
encountered the Portuguese in transit to Muscat and they got into a naval battle. The cannons
of the Portuguese devastated this new fleet and only five ships made it back. The new captain
of the fleet died in battle. This is how Sidi Ali Reis got his post. He traveled to Basra to get to the
fleet.
About What Happened in Basra
He had an interview with the man there and then was given the fleet, which was pretty
damaged due to all it had gone through. He wanted to make arrangements for water, but the
monsoon wasn’t for five months so he took a tour of the holy sites instead. He had a bad dream
that came to pass: the Turkish lost a bunch of men in Egypt. Once the monsoons came, all of
the ships were repaired and there were only isolated Christian boats spotted in the waters. The
fleet began to sail to Egypt.
What Took Place in the Sea of Ormuz
They made it to Bahrain with no sign of the Portuguese and stayed there for a bit. On
their way east, they encountered a Portuguese fleet and the battle raged for the entire day. In
the end, the Ottomans were victorious and the Portuguese retreated. They kept going for a
while without any interruptions, then off the coast of Oman they encountered another
Portuguese fleet. They were also near a fort. This battle was especially devastating, but Sidi Ali
Reis says that it ended in a draw and that there were as many Portuguese boats sunken and
men dead as on the Ottoman side. They had to go to shore to find the survivors of the wrecks
who swam for their lives. Luckily most of the rowers were Arab and being in an Arab land, they
were taken care of. They finally made it to the bay of Ormuz where they made a friend in
another Muslim who revered the Ottoman king. He gave them water and provisions and then
escorted them to the harbor of Guador. The Governor of Guador promised them extra ships
whenever they passed through his lands.
What We Suffered in the Indian Ocean
The weather was terrible. For ten days and nights there were storms that rocked the
ships and made it hard to steer and navigate. The sun was not seen for these ten days. Once
they got close to the shore, they nearly got sucked into a whirlpool and had to anchor and row
against it to avoid wrecking. They saw many interesting sea creatures like giant fish and sea
snakes, many turtles, and many eels. When they got near the coast, they saw some strange
temples and decided not to go ashore. When they got close to Gujarat (their intended
destination), they got sucked into a whirlpool and lost three ships. Everyone managed to make it
