MMW 13 Chapter Reading: The New Landscape
Document Summary
A polish bishop gave the local magistrate a bunch of land to settle in 1237 and he did it. It was massively successful and developed a large area. This was part of a larger trend of people moving and settling new areas. There were many ways that new villages started. Some were the natural expansion of older towns, some were commissioned (like the one described above), some sprang up around monasteries (which were big agricultural centers), and some sprang up around fortresses (for obvious reasons). Exactly how people could afford to move, how they moved, and what they did once they got there isn"t really known during this time period (11th - 13th c. -- the high middle. Ages), so everything we know about the mechanics of the movement is speculative. The way that people knew where there was new land was by advertising campaigns by the lords who owned the land.
