Mmw 13 textbook notes east-west communication during the mongol era (pages. 337-342) & china under mongol rule (pages 373-375) Khanates: the four states that the mongol empire was divided into after khan"s death; one of the lines of his descendants took charge of each state. 1237 the four khanates began to attack europe, stopped when ogodei died in 1241 to elect a new khan. 1256 started to raid in the middle east. Khubilai khan, grandson of chinggis, completed mongol conquest of china. Tried to conquer japan, but couldn"t due to storms destroying the mongol fleets. Purpose of fighting was to gain riches. Different khanates began to separate since they were so far and they began to adapt their government to the area in which they were ruling. Mongol russian territories decentralized, allowed existing princes to continue to have power so long as they paid tribute. 1360"s mongols went back to mongolia from china due to civil war.
