Egypt was considered by herodotus as the gift of the nile . Flooded once a year for several months. Brought fertile soil and moisture for farming. Not as destructive as euphrates and tigris. Helped produce a surplus of agricultural products annually. Was a highway for communication, helping to unify the people along the nile. Nile river was important and thus was tied to political power. King was believed to bring the rise and fall of the nile. Unification of lower egypt and upper egypt in 3100 b. c. e. Followed by the old kingdom (2660-2180 b. c. e) Focal point of everything was the king who commanded the wealth, resources, and people of egypt. Pharoah (used in new kingdom) meant great house. Believed that everything surrounding the king should be magnificent. Massive stone tomb created to contain what the king needed in the afterlife, symbolize his power and his connection to the gods.
