Feminism in waves because different movements of women rising against sexism in different ways (17-18) but waves don"t correspond worldwide: ex: british vs. Us feminism: women trying to understand new ways of life, lesbianism, relationships outside of marriage, economics, new forms of childcare, racial segregation, long work hours. Suffrage seen as marker of equal citizenship (18) suffrage movement was popular and had lots of support (18-19) militant tactics stopped when wwi began. Suffrage 1918 to women over 30 with property. Suffrage 1928 women over 21, same terms as men: describing feminism in waves problematic because it seems like feminism ends when the wave ends (19) after big successes, social movements slow down, women in the workforce wwii. Friedan"s the feminine mystique: second wave in us (19-20) is motherhood and wifehood everything for women, homophobia, only addressing privileged, middle-class white women.
