Document Summary

Bipn 100 electrical signals in neurons book notes. Nerve and muscle cells use electrical signals to respond to stimulus. The nernst equation predicts membrane potential for a single ion. All ions have a resting membrane potential vm. The resting membrane potential represents the separation of electrical charge across the cell membrane. Two factors can influence the membrane potential: uneven distribution of ions across cell membrane. Na+, ca2+, and cl- being more concentrated on the outside of the cell opposed to the inside. K+ more concentrated on the inside opposed to the outside: the permeability of a membrane to certain ions. Resting membrane is more permeable to k+ than to na+ or ca2+, which makes k+ a major ion contributor to the resting potential. The nernst equation describes the membrane potential for permeability to only one ion. This is called the equilibrium potential of the ion eion.
