Document Summary

Anth 23 film notes race: the power of an illusion; episode 3 the house we live. What we perceive as race is one of the first things we notice about each other: attached are values, assumptions, historical meanings. Even those who don"t believe in the stereotypes can name the characteristics of them: ex: skin color, nose shape, hair color, eye shape, accent, style of speech, dress, etc. Race is not a level of biological division: there are no subspecies of human, skin color does not differentiate people in biology. People say you can tell more about a person by how you look. Don"t see race, just think you see race: cultural perception. Race in itself means nothing unless it is given social meaning and the government creates public policy that acts upon these social meanings. Chances and opportunities based on differences perceived in races: ex: white privilege. Immigrants work the hardest, poorest paying jobs along with the inferior races".
